Well, first of all, you should feel better if your tank water's nitrate concentration is high, instead of ammonia or nitrite, because nitrate is very unlikely to kill your dragon fish. I wish I could say the same thing for ammonia and nitrite. Having said that, high amount of nitrate presence in your tank is an indication of problem in your tank water's parameters. When your arowana is exposing to high level of nitrate even for a short term, the following things could happen to your fish:

1. Your arowana will be under stress.

2. Your arowana's immune system will be weaken, and hence your fish will prone to have more problem with opportunistic pathogens in the tank , which might have not causing problem, had the fish's immune system is up and running well.

If the problem of nitrate does not get taken care of, and the fish is continued to be exposed to high level of nitrate for a long term, the following could happen:

1. Your beloved aro will show sign of lethargy (fatigue and tiredness), remain in a stationary position at bottom of tank.

2. Your arowana will start to have problem with its breathing, which is called respiratory distress.

3. Your arowana will start to eat less, and refuse foods all together.

4. Your arowana will start to do lots of yawning.

5. Your arowana will start to show a condition called hexamitiasis, which is commonly known as holes in the head disease.

6. Long term exposure will severely affects your arowana reproductive organ. If you have ambition of breeding your arowana, you can kiss that dream good bye.

I hope my answer help you understand a little more about high level of nitrate exposure could do to your arowana, although it would not kill, but definitely will have some pretty bad consequences as indicated above.
